what’s graphic design?

…since the stone age people have looked for ways to visualize objects, create graphic ideas and concepts and to bring order to a dissorganized world. People over the centuries such as painters, artists and printers have brought graphic design to people in all kinds of ways. In the 1920s a famous book designer W Addison Dwiggins, first used the phrase ‘graphic designer’ to describe to people how his work produced print design. Today graphic design is a popular art and well known trade that encompasses everything from designing leaflets, brochures and web sites to aircraft livery, food packaging and road signs.

The term computer graphics was first used in the 1960′s by William Fetter, a graphic designer for Boeing Aircraft Co. Computer images were created from plotting points on a mathematical field without the advantage of a screen. The profession of designing for print or electronic forms of visual information, as for an advertisement, publication, or website design all of which are a form of graphic design.

Combining text with graphics to communicate a product or service effectively is the design of logos, graphics, brochures, newsletters, posters, signs. Graphic design is the most universal of all the arts and used everywhere from here in Cheshire, across the UK and the rest of the world. Graphic design explains, indicates, informs and decorates bringing structure and order to the world, without the organisation that the graphic design process brings we would have to explain and receive all information by the spoken word just as the early humans did all those years ago.

You can see graphic design in the form of cartography for maps of Cheshire and Lancashire from as early as 1577, Merseyside hadn’t yet been established. Infact the Romans first began creating maps of a sort over 2,000 years ago for Chester and surrouding areas which was then known as Deva.

Even Robots and Droids get attacked

Experts have discovered a malicious application that can steal money via phones running Google’s Android operating system, it poses as a media player but once installed it begins sending out premium rate text messages to the app’s creator who collects the fees.

It was first discovered by Kaspersky Labs and is thought to be the first application of its kind to hit Android, an otherwise solid system. Mobile security firm Lookout on Tuesday warned that a booby-trapped Movie Player application is infecting Android phones in Russia with a virus that sends costly text messages. Russia-based Kaspersky Lab discovered the malicious “Trojan” code hidden in a media player application people are enticed to download onto smartphones.

The Trojan uses the system to begin sending SMS messages to premium rate numbers without the owner realizing or consenting resulting in cash passing from a user’s account to that of the ‘crooks’. So if you thought that robots and Droids can’t be attacked, you were wrong! This however is the first virus attack on Andorid OS and Kaspersky has predicted that more attacks could be seen in the future.

What is html5 and why should we care

The use of HTML 5 as the standard is still a long way off but I think its still worth getting slightly excited about it, unless you’re devoted to IE that is. It looks like not all of the HTML 5 features will be available even in Explorer 9.0! Not wanting to sound like a total Firefox fan you have to admire the fact that the browser already supports 77% of HTML5 features and with the release of FF 4.0 this should be 99%

So it’s worth taking a closer look at some of the changes that are coming, and how they may benefit us. It is estimated that about half of all Internet users are already using browsers that are HTML 5 ready. Firefox 3.5, Chrome, Safari and Opera are the most popular of these though the support is limited at present. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 8 also has support for many of HTML5 features but its still a bit patchy as the graphic shows.

Benefits such as better direct html support for drawing, animation, video and audio, geolocation APIs make location with GPS or other methods directly available to any HTML 5 compatible browser apps and client side SQL database api that can be used for storing data locally, to name a few.

Its still only a blip on the radar but html 5 is fast approaching, there might be mixed feelings from developers points of view but it’s most likely going to be powering our websites in the not too distant future.

The Apple iPad keyboard dock is ideal for shopping online and paying bills especially when you’re typing in your credit card details however it lacks certain features such as using the direction keys to navigate your way through drop-down menus on some websites but over all this is a must if you want to use your iPad for more than just sofa surfing and social networking.
